Along the shores of the Lac la Belle Sloughs nest these brilliant creatures. These big ol birds mate for life, and form lasting bonds with their partners, which I wanted to paint here.
An original pen and watercolor illustration on Arches cold press paper (has more texture).
It has a little bit of my lovely watercolor mess on it. Originals are sealed with a fixative to preserve the illustration.
Seems they are everywhere… tiptoeing the two tracks near the low bush blueberries, standing in the fields, purring their way across the sky. I first encountered these birds consciously on my family’s hobby farm. I noticed one standing in the yard quite close to the house in a misty rain. i fox walked out as close as I dared and stood with it for a while… before pushing the nearness and causing it to fly off.
